Job description

Temporary Assistant Communications Officer required for a large public sector client based at Linenhall Street, Belfast.

Rate of Pay: £12.74 per hour

Location: Belfast city centre

Hours: Full time - 37.5 hours

Duration: Temporary ongoing

Main duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provide a media communications service as part of the Corporate and Public Affairs team
  • Act as a first point of contact for journalists and other media in relation to enquiries about agency services, staff, plans and other related matters
  • Handle media enquiries, and assist in the preparation and issuing of statements, and liaise with print, broadcast and online media
  • Facilitate media interviews; assist in the arrangement and management of press conferences, photo calls, interviews and campaign launches; and assist in the coordination of journalists and media crews on agency premises and on location
  • Assist in the provision of media and communications support to directors and senior managers, as well as staff throughout the organisation
  • Liaise with communications colleagues and others to safeguard the agency's reputation and identify opportunities for coordinated communication
  • Assist in identifying, developing and delivering proactive media opportunities
  • Develop communications plans for proactive and potentially high-profile changes that may impact on service delivery or the reputation of the agency
  • Participate in monitoring, responding and creating content on social media platforms
  • Assist in media and social media monitoring, analysis of media trends and the development of agency media strategies as required
  • Assist in assessment, analysis and engagement on political and public affairs issues.
  • Provide operational support in the updating and maintenance of the agency's internet and intranet sites
  • Record enquiries using an electronic monitoring system/ database for media enquiries and related matters
  • Assist with the organisation of corporate events, public affairs and digital communication when necessary
  • Assist with the preparation of briefings and other writing as delegated.
  • Attend, as a member of or adviser to, various meetings, including incident management meetings, and committees as appropriate

Essential criteria:

  • A university degree or professional qualification and one year's relevant experience working in a communications team, involving liaising with internal and external stakeholders
    • OR - HNC /HND or relevant equivalent/higher qualification AND two years' relevant experience working in a communications team, involving liaising with internal and external stakeholders.
    • OR - four years' relevant experience working in a communications team, involving liaising with internal and external stakeholders, including at least one in drafting responses
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of staff within the agency and to liaise with various external agencies.
  • Ability to work under pressure without full supervision - which may require working outside normal hours.
  • Working knowledge of information technology and familiarity with Microsoft Word, Outlook and PowerPoint.
  • Good written and organisational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain good working relations with a wide range of health and social services care professionals and others.
  • The ability to participate in and promote team effectiveness
