Band 4 Diabetic Eye Screener will be responsible for a large public sector organisation based through the Belfast Trust.
Salary: £11.53 p/h
Location: Diabetic Eye Screening Programme, will need to drive to different locations
Hours: 37.5hpw, weekends & evenings
JOB SUMMARY / MAIN PURPOSE:
The post holder will be responsible for undertaking retinal photography to detect eye disease in patients with diabetes and subsequent grading of these images in accordance with national screening standards. The post holder will work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team and contribute to the smooth and efficient running of the service. Diabetic eye screening is provided daily at various locations throughout the Trust, at Ophthalmology outreach centres and at GP practices across Northern Ireland.
KEY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Participate in the provision of a high-quality Diabetic Eye Screening Programme across Northern Ireland daily.
- Undertake all aspects of retinal photography including visual acuity testing, administration of eye drops, taking of retinal photographs, ensuring that all photographs meet the required standard for grading.
- Manage and operate the specialist imaging equipment according to set procedures including initial trouble shooting if required.
- Consistently produce high quality images and undertake retraining as and when necessary.
- Review and grade the images in accordance with national standards and defined protocols, acting upon the grading result as appropriate.
- Complete monthly training sets to ensure the grading of images is to the required standard.
- Use the IT system to manage the screening clinics, including checking and updating of patient information, taking, review and triage of images and primary grading.
- Organise the smooth running of clinics including management of drop in patients and follow up of those who DNA.
- Ensure there are adequate consumables available for screening clinics.
- Participate in quality assurance activities to support service improvement e.g., audit.
- Communicate effectively with patients and relatives to assist in their understanding of retinal photography.
- Liaise effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and GP practice staff.
- Promote good management of diabetes to service users.
- Adhere to all relevant departmental procedures and Trust policies.
- Complete Level 3 Health Screener Diploma in Diabetic Eye Screening & Grading within 2 years of registration.
- Undertake ongoing training to keep up to date with technology and knowledge of diabetic eye disease.
- Assist with the production of presentation/teaching materials for the screening service.
- Participate in annual staff appraisal and regular review to identify any further training and development needs.
- Carry out any other duties as may be reasonably required by the Senior OSP.
- Must have 2 A Levels in Math's, Healthcare, Science or ICT or NVQ equivalent in a relevant subject, e.g., Healthcare, Biology, Photography and a minimum of 2 years' experience in a healthcare setting working directly with patients/ clients within hospital or community setting.
HNC/D or equivalent in health and social
Care and minimum of 2 years' experience in a healthcare setting working directly with patients/ clients within hospital or community setting.
Hold either City and Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Diabetic Retinopathy Screening, Imaging and Grading or the Level 3 Health Screener Diploma in Diabetic Eye Screening & Grading and 2 years' experience in diabetic eye screening.
- The appointed applicant will be expected to undertake and successfully complete the Level 3 Health Screener Diploma in Diabetic Eye Screening & Grading within 2 years of registration.
- Must hold a full driving license valid in the UK and have access to a car.

- Must have basic ICT, computer, and keyboard skills.
- Have excellent communication skills with experience of adapting these to suit any given situation.
- Can work on own and manage own workload daily.
- Must be flexible to meet the needs of the service including evening and weekend working.
