Medical Laboratory Assistant Band 3



The Client: Local Healthcare body based in Craigavon, serving local residents.

Scientific and Clinical Responsibilities


The following duties apply to MLAs working in all departments within the Pathology & Laboratory Service.


  • Receive, label, sort and prepare samples for analysis according to set protocols.
  • Prepare reagents and chemical for use during analysis
  • Check that all Laboratory forms and sample containers are completed satisfactorily.
  • Enter patient and or test details into laboratory computer systems.
  • Prepare samples for referral to other laboratories.
  • Monitor stock levels and report to supervisor.
  • Receipt and storage of reagents, consumables and samples.
  • Collate orders and despatch specimen containers to wards and GPs . Maintain records of orders despatched.
  • Printing of barcode labels
  • Examination process
  • Perform a range of tasks under the supervision of a Biomedical Scientist. These tasks may form all or part of a final result to be authorised by a BMS.
  • Routine maintenance of equipment

Post -Examination

  • Store samples following analysis, including update of archive records if appropriate.
  • Disposal of waste in accordance with Trust's Management of Waste policy.
  • Cleaning and decontamination of equipment including work surfaces and defrosting of fridges and freezers if required.

Clinical Chemistry and Haematology

  • MLAs in this area will be required to undertake general reception duties, including
  • the logging of visitors into and out of the building.
  • Receipt and logging of orders for specimen containers and request forms.
  • Loading of samples onto automated analysers.
  • Routine maintenance of automated analysers under the supervision of a BMS.
  • Scanning of request forms for automated data entry and/or form retrieval.
  • Operate a telephone results service.


  • MLAs working in Microbiology will in addition to their generic duties will undertake;
  • The sterilisation of waste using autoclaves
  • The preparation of a variety of media for culture
  • The innoculation of plates for culture and sub-culturing of broths
  • The loading and unloading of incubators.
  • The recording of temperatures of fridges, freezers and incubators.

Cellular Pathology

  • MLAs while working in Cellular Pathology will be required to;
  • Write for biomedical scientists and pathologists during specimen cut up
  • Maintain reagent levels in certain pieces of equipment
  • Prepare basic chemical solutions for use in analysis
  • Transport reagent to and from appropriate laboratory stores.


  1. 5 GCSE's at Grades A-C or equivalent/higher qualifications including a science subject

OR 1 year relevant experience in a laboratory setting

  1. Experience of using computer systems.
