Senior Civil / Construction Engineer

At Grafton Recruitment we are currently seeking to recruit a Senior Civil / Construction Engineer to take up a specific purpose contract with our client. The contract is expected to have a duration of approximately five years and will ideally have an immediate start depending on health and safety circumstances. Skype interviews will be accommodated for suitable applicants.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the development and delivery of a new maintenance depot for a new rail fleet. The purpose of the role will be to manage the project through all stages from specification development, procurement, design, construction commissioning to handover for operation.

Specific responsibilities will be as follows:

  • Project Management
    • Preparation and execution of project plans for assigned project(s)
    • Identification and organisation of resources required to deliver project plan
    • Identification and control of variances from project plan
    • Planning and execution of any tasks required to deliver the project
    • Monitor and report on project budget
    • Identification and management of potential risks to ensure they do not affect successful delivery of project goals in accordance with project plan
    • Preparation of project progress reports
  • Management of the project team including consultants to deliver on all project goals
  • Keep up-to-date with best industry practice and production methods
  • Knowledge of and adherence to company policies, standards, project group procedures, safety culture and procedures. Ensure adherence by project team members to such procedures
  • Cross feeding of relevant information to other projects to ensure lessons are learnt and current best practice is followed
  • Provide guidance/ mentoring to project team and reviewing quality of work carried out by project staff
  • Allocation of annual performance targets to project staff and appraisal of project staff on a 6 monthly basis

Interested candidates will meet the following requirements:

  • Engineering degree (Civil / Construction) but similar qualifications with appropriate experience may qualify
  • Extensive Project Management experience, ideally in a highly regulated industry such as rail
  • Knowledge and experience in the delivery of large-scale construction projects
  • Strong communication (incl. presentation skills) & interpersonal skills
  • Proven track record in people management & ability to manage diverse teams & resources
  • Excellent initiative, creativity & problem solving abilities
  • Understanding of the rail regulatory environment & technical standards will be desirable
  • Previous experience as part of project team involved in build of new rail depot will be desirable
  • Knowledge of railway maintenance equipment will be desirable
  • Capable of working to tight timetables & management correction & recovery plan as needed
  • Experience in managing budgets & expenditure & reporting regularly in prescribed format
  • Competent IT skills such as Microsoft Outlook, Project, Excel, Word, etc
