Verification Officer

Temporary verification officer required for a large public sector organisation based through the Belfast Trust.

Rate of Pay: 10.40

Location: Franklin Street, Belfast

Hours: 37.5 hours per week

Duration: Temporary ongoing


The post will require a person who is highly motivated, is methodical and organised and who can offer the highest standards of accuracy, integrity and confidentiality. The post holder will be important member of the team responsible for the verification of claims made by patients to entitlement to access health care in Northern Ireland.

Basic function: Using the Verification Case Management Computer System, the post holder will undertake verification work to ensure the validity of patient claims to access public funded health care in Northern Ireland.


  1. Action, as appropriate, all elements of the entitlement verification process: e.g.

Issue of initial query letters to patients

Enter on to case management system details of all correspondence and documentation received from patients;

Open post and entering information onto case management system

Undertake assessment of entitlement based on information received

Issue of reminder letters, entitled and not entitled letters as appropriate, to patients.

Update the BSO patient registration system with patient entitlement information, where appropriate.

2 Verify the accuracy of all output from the Case Management System, including letters to patients.

3 Deal directly with queries from patients, either by phone or in person.

4 Participate in daily post opening procedures, in line with existing policies and procedures.

5 Liaise, as appropriate, with other government agencies to have independent verification process undertaken.

  1. Undertake initial systematic assessments of patient's entitlement.

7 Provide detailed responses to requests from patients or their representatives in relation to entitlement issues, either in person or by phone.

  1. Where appropriate, maintain a manual Brought Forward (BF) system to ensure all outstanding issues are addressed as quickly as possible.

9 Ensure data security and confidentially is adhered to at all times.

10 Undertake all assigned work to the highest professional standards and in line with agreed protocols.

11 Any other duties appropriate to the Band as may be allocated from time to time.

12 Ensure all filing in relation to verification is carried out in accordance with approved procedures and in keeping with relevant legislation.


To assist the Business Services Organisation in the fulfilment of its statutory duty under Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act 1998, to promote equality of opportunity and good relations, and also the Human Rights Act 1998 and the Disability Discrimination Order 2007.

To support the Business Services Organisation in meeting its obligations under Risk Management by adhering to the controls assurance standards identified in the Risk Register.

All duties must be carried out in compliance with Health and Safety Policy and statutory regulations.

Essential criteria

  1. 5 GCSE;s (A-C) or equivalent, including Maths and English Language or a

higher educational standard and 1 year's experience in administration (including use of computer systems)


18 months administrative experience (including use of computer systems),

  1. Excellent keyboard skills
  2. Experience and ability to work on your own initiative and as part of a team.
  3. Ability to meet set deadlines and ensure that verification work is actioned in

accordance with required timescales.

  1. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  2. Ability to work with highly sensitive / confidential material


Experience in using a similar processing system

Knowledge of entitlement to access health care in Northern Ireland.


Ability to work across a number of concurrent work streams, prioritise work accordingly and deliver on objectives

Effective communication skills particularly with a variety of stakeholders.

Ability to identify solutions to problems and implement them effectively.

Effective personal organisational skills, including high level of accuracy or attention to detail, ability to organise own workload and work to tight deadlines.
