Job description

Exciting Opportunities for Veterinary Officers throughout Northern Ireland.

Key Responsibilities

The Veterinary Officer plays a key role in delivering the Veterinary Service objectives of protecting the consumer, the public and animals through the application and enforcement of Veterinary Public Health, Animal Health and Animal Welfare Legislation.

The main purpose of the postholder is to facilitate and enable trade in live animals and Products of animal Origin (POAO) through the provision of accurate and secure Veterinary Export Health Certification (EHC)

Certification of the following consignments will be required:

  • Live Animals
  • Meat and Meat Products
  • Dairy and Dairy Products
  • Fish
  • Animal By Products
  • Germplasm

The field of veterinary certification within VSAHG's work programme is predicted to expand considerably (provisional estimates of a seven fold increase anticipated over the coming years ahead as a result of:

  • EU Exit
  • International recognition of the NI animal health status
  • Expansion and development of Third Country markets
  • DAERA's strategic direction, notably the 'Going for Growth' initiative

The work of the veterinary officer through the provision of accurate veterinary EHC confirming that all relevant aspects of animal health & welfare, food and feed law have been complied with will be central to the Departments success in this area.

The successful candidate will be required to lead up and provide instruction to a team of Trade Certification Support Officers (TCSOs). TCSOs working under the direction and supervision of a Veterinary Officer will complete the checks and verification tasks required to enable veterinary EHC.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must be:

1(a) A fellow or a practicing member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS);


1(b) Eligible to seek membership of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). It will then be a condition of appointment that the successful candidate becomes a member of the RCVS;


  1. At least one year's post qualification experience working in a state veterinary service, in a veterinary practice or other relevant veterinary experience in farm animals or veterinary public health.

Working Hours

The successful candidate(s) must be flexible and available to cover irregular work patterns which may on occasions be requested at short notice and outside of normal office hours. Requests can be for full days, part days, or a number of hours at any time. No guarantee can be given of any work for all successful candidates.

Additional Information

Persons appointed must have access to a form of transport which will enable them to fulfil the responsibilities of this role and they must be prepared to travel throughout Northern Ireland and elsewhere if required.

Basic Security clearance will be required.
